If you’ve ever experienced heartburn (otherwise known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease), you’ll know just how painful and uncomfortable it can be.

‘Some 40 per cent of people in the UK may be suffering with at least one digestive problem,’ reveals nutritionist Lily Soutter on behalf of Nexium Control. ‘Also, digestive complaints such as heartburn can often reoccur, especially if there’s lack of knowledge about the best ways to manage and treat the symptoms.’

3. Alcohol

OK, we admit this one might not be a complete surprise. ‘Alcohol is a common trigger for heartburn,’ says Soutter.

It’s probably best to limit your consumption by having completely alcohol-free nights each week, rather than lowering the alcohol content of drinks by turning them into spritzers.

‘If you like a glass of wine, people often try turning it into a spritzer by adding sparkling water to decrease the overall alcohol content,’ says Soutter. ‘While spritzers are a quick and easy way to limit your alcohol consumption, as we’ve just learned, carbonated beverages may trigger heartburn. If this is the case for you, it may be wise to limit your consumption.’
